Check whether your resume PDF is ATS-readable

This does not extract text from a file - it cannot, because nothing here reads uploaded files. What it actually checks is what you get when you open your resume, press select all, copy, and paste: the exact same operation an ATS performs internally.

If that paste comes out as real words, an ATS can almost certainly read your resume too. If it comes out empty, or as strings of nonsense characters, your PDF is very likely image-based - a scan or a flattened export - and no ATS text parser can read it at all.

How this is worked out

Nothing is uploaded or extracted here - you do the extraction yourself, the same way, by selecting and copying text out of your own PDF viewer.
What you paste is checked for signs of a real text layer: a normal ratio of spaces to characters, a normal ratio of letters, no stray replacement characters, and a reasonable word count for the length pasted.
If none of those checks trip, the text layer is almost certainly intact and machine-readable.

What this does not cover

A PDF made from a scanned image, or exported flattened from certain design tools, has no text layer at all - selecting text in it either selects nothing or selects garbage, and this is exactly what this check is built to catch.
This cannot fix a bad PDF. If the paste comes out empty or garbled, the fix is to re-export the resume from the original document (Word, Google Docs, LaTeX) as a text-based PDF, not to edit the PDF itself.
A resume that passes this check can still fail other ATS checks unrelated to text extraction, such as an unusual layout or missing sections.
