Resume file name generator
A file name is the first thing an ATS or a recruiter sees before opening anything, and "Resume_Final_V3(2).pdf" is not a good first impression. A clean name uses your actual name, plain hyphens, and no spaces or special characters.
This assembles a few name options from what you type. It does not rename any actual file - you still save your PDF with the name you pick.

How this is worked out
- Each field is stripped of anything that is not a letter or number, spaces and punctuation become a single hyphen, and repeated hyphens are collapsed.
- A base name of Firstname-Lastname-Resume is always produced, with role and company added as optional extra segments.
- Duplicate options (for example, when role and company are both left blank) are removed automatically.
What this does not cover
- This only generates a name, it does not rename or create a file - saving your resume as this file name is a manual step on your computer.
- It does not check length limits for any specific job portal upload field, which vary by site.
- Nothing you type here is sent anywhere; the names are assembled in your browser.
Questions people ask
- Why avoid spaces in a file name?
- Spaces sometimes get encoded as %20 when a file is uploaded or shared as a link, which makes the name harder to read and occasionally breaks older upload forms.
- Should the file name include the word "resume"?
- Yes. Some ATS systems and recruiters sort downloaded files by name, and "Resume" tells them what the file is without opening it.
- Should I include the target company in the file name?
- Only for a specific, tailored application. If you are sending the same file to several companies, a role-only name avoids sending someone else's name back to them by mistake.
