Should my resume always be one page?

For under about ten years of experience, one page is the common default. Beyond that, a second page is normal if it holds relevant, recent work rather than padding.

Why does my word count look short for a full page?

Font size and margins affect this more than word count does. A resume set in a larger font with generous spacing needs fewer words to fill a page.

Does this tool check my formatting?

No. It only reads the text you paste. Formatting, fonts and page breaks are not visible in pasted text at all.

Length is one of the few resume questions with a real answer range rather than a right answer. A single page usually reads as a few hundred words once formatting, spacing and headings are accounted for.

How this is worked out

Words are counted the way a person reading aloud would count them: any run of characters separated by whitespace.
Bullets are counted as non-empty lines, so this also works if your resume is pasted as paragraphs rather than bullet points.
The length bands are a rough guide built from how many words typically fit a single page at a normal resume font size, not a measurement of your actual PDF.

What this does not cover

This cannot see page breaks, font size or margins, so it cannot tell you if you are literally at one page or two.
A long word count is not automatically bad if every line earns its place. A short one is not automatically good if it is short because of what was left out.
Nothing you paste is stored, uploaded or sent anywhere - the count runs in your browser.
