Salary band builder
A salary band is a midpoint and a spread, not a single number. The midpoint is what a fully competent person in the role is worth to you; the spread gives room for someone new to the level and someone about to be promoted out of it.
This builds the band from those two inputs and checks it against the level above, since a band that overlaps too much with the next one up removes the reason to promote anyone into it.

How this is worked out
- Minimum and maximum are the midpoint moved down and up by half the spread percentage.
- The next level’s minimum is estimated the same way, using the same spread, then compared against this level’s maximum to find the overlapping range.
- Overlap share is the overlapping range divided by the width of this level’s own band.
What this does not cover
- This assumes both levels use the same spread percentage. If the next level is wider or narrower, treat the overlap figure as a rough guide rather than exact.
- A band is a policy, not a guarantee: real offers inside it still depend on the candidate’s specific experience and your negotiation room.
- It does not adjust for location or currency. Run it separately per location if pay differs by city.
Questions people ask
- How much overlap between bands is normal?
- Somewhere between 10% and 30% is common; it lets a top performer at one level out-earn someone new to the next level without the bands being identical. Above roughly 50% overlap, the two levels start to feel like the same job on paper.
- Should senior bands be wider than junior ones?
- Usually, yes. Judgment and impact vary more at senior levels, so a wider band gives room for that without forcing everyone toward the midpoint.
- What if I only have one salary number, not a range?
- Treat it as the midpoint and pick a spread that matches how much variation you are comfortable with inside the same title. 25% is a reasonable default to start from.
