Fresher vs experienced salary gap calculator
How much more does experience actually pay, and how fast would a fresher’s salary need to grow to catch up to a more senior one? Rather than quote a claimed average gap for the whole market, this works on the two figures you give it.
Enter a starting salary and a target salary, along with how many years of experience separate them, and it shows the ratio between the two and the compound growth rate that would be needed to close that gap in the time you specify.

How this is worked out
- The multiple is simply the experienced salary divided by the fresher salary.
- The required growth rate is the compound annual rate that would carry the fresher figure to the experienced figure over the years you specify, the same compounding a savings account or a loan uses.
- Both salaries are numbers you supply. No external salary data is used for either side of the comparison.
What this does not cover
- Real career growth is rarely a smooth compound curve, it usually comes in jumps around promotions and job changes rather than a steady percentage every year.
- This does not distinguish CTC from in-hand pay. Use the same basis for both figures or the multiple will be misleading.
- It says nothing about whether the gap is fair for the roles involved, that depends on scope, responsibility and market conditions this tool does not see.
Questions people ask
- Where does the fresher and experienced figure come from?
- They are whatever you enter, your own offer, a friend’s, or a job posting you are evaluating. This tool does not supply a default market figure for either.
- Is a 3.6× gap normal?
- This tool will not answer that with a claimed norm, since a fair multiple depends heavily on role, company size and location. Use it to compare your own numbers, not to check them against an unstated average.
- What does the required growth rate actually tell me?
- It reframes the multiple as a yearly percentage, which is often easier to reason about than a raw ratio when you are thinking about whether a target salary is realistic within a given timeframe.
- Can I use this for two experienced salaries instead of fresher vs experienced?
- Yes, the labels are just for context. The arithmetic works the same way for any two salaries and a number of years between them.
