Exit interview answer builder
An exit interview answer has to survive two audiences: the person asking it now, and a reference check months later that might contradict it. The safest answers are true statements, chosen for what they emphasise, not fabrications.
Tell it what actually pushed you to leave and it will hand back a version that says that plainly but without naming names or airing grievances that do not need airing.

Your exit interview answer
I have learned a great deal here, but I have reached a point where the next step in my growth is not available in this role. I am looking for a position with a broader scope of ownership.
- Core reason framed
- growth

How this is worked out
- Each reason maps to a fixed template that states the true underlying issue plainly, without naming a specific person or airing every grievance behind it.
- Your optional detail is appended as a specific example, worded to stay factual rather than accusatory.
- Nothing here calls an AI model or invents a reason you did not select. It only rephrases the reason you chose into something you can say out loud.
What this does not cover
- This will not manufacture a flattering reason if the true one is not flattering. Saying something true and measured protects you far better in a reference check than a story that falls apart under one follow-up question.
- It does not coach you on tone of voice or delivery in the room itself, only on the words. How you say it in the meeting is still on you.
- It deliberately avoids naming a specific manager or colleague, even if you name them in the detail box, by generalising the wording. Edit further if you still want a name removed from your own draft.
Questions people ask
- Should I be fully honest in an exit interview?
- Be honest about the substance, careful about the delivery. Naming a manager’s specific behaviour in detail rarely helps you and can travel back to them. Naming the underlying issue, such as scope or pay, is usually safe and often useful feedback for the company.
- What if HR asks a direct follow-up question I had not planned for?
- Repeat your core reason calmly rather than expanding into new territory. You are not obligated to answer every probing question in full, especially about compensation you have been offered elsewhere.
- Can what I say in an exit interview affect my reference?
- It can, particularly if it is inconsistent with what a manager might say separately. That is the reason to stick to something true and measured rather than something designed only to sound good in the room.
