Professional tax calculator

Professional tax is charged by state governments, not by the centre. That is why the deduction on your payslip changes when you move city, and why some people have never seen it at all.

The national ceiling is ₹2,500 a year. No state can charge more than that, which is why the amounts are small and the rules are all slightly different.

Questions people ask

Which states have no professional tax?
Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Punjab in most cases, Himachal Pradesh and several north-eastern states do not levy it on salaried employees. If you work in one of them your payslip simply will not show the line.
Which state applies if I work remotely from a different state?
Generally the state where your employer has the registered place of work you are attached to, not where you happen to sit. Employers with staff spread across states usually register in each one. Ask payroll, because this genuinely varies.
Can I claim it back?
Not as a refund, but under the old tax regime it is deductible from your salary income, which lowers your taxable pay by the amount you paid.
