Tax on a bonus
A bonus is taxed as salary, and it lands on top of everything else you earn. That means it is charged at your highest slab rate from the first rupee.
The number that matters is not your average tax rate. It is your marginal rate, and this calculator finds it by taxing your year twice: once without the bonus and once with it.

Always lower than the rate on the bonus itself

How this is worked out
- Income tax is computed on your salary alone, then on salary plus bonus.
- The difference between the two is the tax the bonus caused.
- Dividing that by the bonus gives the effective rate, which is your marginal rate including any surcharge and cess it triggered.
What this does not cover
- Employers often deduct TDS on a bonus at a flat rate that does not match your actual liability. Any overpayment comes back as a refund after you file.
- A bonus can push you past ₹50 lakh of taxable income, where surcharge begins. When that happens the effective rate on the bonus jumps well above the slab rate.
- Retention bonuses with a lock-in are taxed when paid, even if you may later have to repay them.
Questions people ask
- Why was so much deducted from my bonus?
- Two reasons usually. It is taxed at your top slab rate rather than an average, and payroll often withholds at a conservative flat rate to avoid under-deducting. If too much was taken you get it back when you file.
- Can I reduce tax on a bonus?
- Only by reducing your taxable income overall, through the old-regime deductions, or by asking to have it paid in a different financial year if your income will be lower then. There is no special lower rate for bonuses.
- What if I have to return a joining bonus later?
- You repay the gross amount in most contracts, even though you only received the net. Getting the tax back is a separate and often difficult exercise. Our joining bonus clawback calculator shows the size of that gap.
